Victor Olivares

Born and raised along the South Texas coast, Victor Olivares is a true waterman with a deep respect for the fish, the tides, and the traditions passed down to him. Taught to fish at a young age by his grandfather, Victor grew up learning the subtleties of redfish, snook, and tarpon before eventually finding his passion in saltwater fly fishing. Today, Victor trailers his skiff up and down the Texas coast, guiding clients through shallow flats and coastal waters while creating memorable experiences that go far beyond just catching fish. Whether it is stalking redfish in ankle-deep water or turning a fresh catch into ceviche on the boat, Victor's approach is rooted in craftsmanship, patience, and appreciation for the resource.

Where are you from and how did you get into Fly Fishing?

I was born in Brownsville, Texas, and both of my parents are from Matamoros, Tamaulipas. My family in Mexico has been in the fishing industry for over a century. I began fishing as soon as I was able to walk. I started using artificial lures at a very young age. When I was a kid, I saw a man fly fishing for trout out of his cabin in Arroyo City, Texas. I walked up to him and asked if he could show me what he was doing. From that moment on, fly fishing has been my favorite way to catch fish.

What made you decide to pursue a career in the outdoors?

By the age of 16, I had a small skiff and would take a lot of my friends fishing. Being familiar with South Texas, we had some great days on the water. I started chartering family friends and people from up north to make some extra money, and I have been guiding ever since.

What is it about Pecos that makes you excited to work with our product?

Some of the best memories of my outdoor life are when everyone gathers around the table and shares stories about how the day went. I was taught to cook my catch during the day for a quick lunch, like ceviche. With the PECOS table, I am able to carry it in my skiff or anywhere I go and share that experience with my clients.

What is a dream trip for you or a goal in your career that you’d like to accomplish?

A dream trip for me would be fly fishing in Costa Rica or Belize for giant snook on the fly. My goal is to live a healthy life and continue sharing the beauty our fishery has to offer with everyone.
